2016 YMCA Track & Field Middle School Invitational: Halladay 4:46.47

Kamiah Middle School's Alfredo Gonzalez competes in theYMCA Track & Field Middle School Invitational long jump on May 28, 2016 at Mountain View High School, Meridian, Idaho. Gonzalez finished seventh with a jump or 16-06.75.
Start of the sixth grade 1600 (L to R: Mikella Tobin, Kayleigh Maloney, Saije Camp, Alexia Corona) at the YMCA Track & Field Middle School Invitational. Tobin finished first (5:45.85), followed by Maloney (5:52.62) and Corona (5:57.10).
Rigby's Camryn Williams and Victory Charter's Amanda Lee at the finish of the sprint medley relay (100-100-200-400m). Victory Charter finished first (2:06.40), followed by Rigby (2:06.47), Sage Valley (2:08.89), and Rockland (2:13.74).

The 2016 version of the YMCA Track & Field Middle School Invitation was a little more special with a national level record run by Lake Hazel Middle School's (Meridian) Lexy Halladay. Her 1600 meter winning time of 4:46.47 is the fastest time in the nation this year for an eighth grader. This time would rank her as the 15th fastest in the nation this year for high school girls.

Lexy Halladay finishes lap three as Sara Christianson cheers her on. Sara helped pace Lexy through the first 1100 meters. These two are Idaho's two fastest distance prep girls with Lexy's 1600 (4:46.47) and Sara's Idaho State Meet record times in the 1600 (4:53.86) and 3200 (10:36.00) which she set in May 2016 during the Idaho State Track & Field Championships.
Lexy Halladay starts lap four.

2016 Idaho High School Track and Field State Championships

Capital junior Britt Ipsen rotates in his triple jump landing during the Idaho High School Track and Field State 5A Championships at Dona Larsen Park on May 21, 2016. Ipsen's best jump of 46-01.75 was good for second place behind teammate Sam Brixey's 46-08.25.

Borah junior Malia Vineyard is all smiles after anchoring the 4x200 relay team (1:43.15) to victory during the 5A Idaho State Championships. Vineyard and her teammates on the 4x200 (Katelyn Powell, Amanda Chipman, and Kiana Corpus) also went on to win the 4x400 (3:57.45).
The Idaho High School Track and Field State Championships. One of my favorite events each year. I made it for about half the 5A/4A meet at Dona Larsen Park in Boise, Idaho on May 20-21, 2016. I always appreciate the opportunity provided by the IHSAA and the meet official for the access around the meet.

Pocatello sophomore Harlee Hales has a dominating win in the Idaho State Championships 4A 200 meter dash with a time of 25.79. Hales finished with four golds, anchoring her team's 800 meter sprint and 4x400 relay teams to victory in addition to her 200 meter win and meet record setting 400 meter run (55.63).

Caldwell Sophomore Mark Sullivan clears 14-00 on this vault and would go on to clear 15-00 to win the Idaho State Championships 4A pole vault title. Mark was the third member in his family to win a pole vault title while representing Caldwell High School. His dad, Troy, won a state title in 1978, and his brother, Matt, won titles in 2011 and 2012.

Number one seed, Capital junior Kari Taylor (orange spikes) at the start of the Idaho State Championships 5A 800 meter run. Taylor finished first in 2:14.04.

Mountain View senior Andre Jones has the lead in Heat 1 of the Idaho State Championships 5A 110 meter high hurdles on May 20, 2016. Jones posted the fastest qualifying time with a 14.69. Jones finished second in the finals with a time 14.51 behind Capital's Sam Brixey's 14.21.

Rocky Mountain senior Michael Slagowski has a dominate lead after the first lap on his way to setting a 800 meter record (1:49.36) at the Idaho State Championships. Slagowski defended his 800 meters, 1600 (4:16.76) and 3200 (9:36.86) titles. He entered the meet with the nation's fastest high school times in the 800 (1:48.36), 1600 (4:03.97), and mile (3:59.53).

Capital junior Tristin Bowens and Mountain View sophomore Tori Sloan separate from the field after the first 40 meters of the Idaho State Championships 5A 100 meter sprint. Bowens held her lead to win (12.18) and was followed by Sloan (12.35).
Bishop Kelly anchor Matt Dean celebrates winning the 4A 4x400 relay.

Starter Nick Ciaccio takes momentary protection from the elements. Rain showers and occasional downpours occurred over the two day Idaho State Championships on May 20-21, 2016.

Borah senior Sara Christianson increases her lead during the second lap of the 5A 1600 meter Idaho State Championships. Christiansen would win going away in setting a new state meet record (4:53.86). A day earlier, she set a state meet record in the 3200 (10:36) in the rain.
Capital senior Sam Brixey sets his blocks for the 5A 110 hurdles final. Brixey repeated as state champion in the 110 (14.21) and 300 hurdles (38.01) and also added wins in the long jump (22-4) and triple jump (46-8.25).

Saturday on the Central Rim: Granma's Attic & Art Gallery

Refurbished hand painted, Appaloosa rocking horse available for purchase at Granma's Attic in Boise, ID
Granma's Attic & Art Gallery on the corner of Garden St and Emerald St. in Boise, Idaho's Central Rim Neighborhood, May 14, 2016.
The vast array of second hand toys on display off Emerald Street has always been an eye turner for me. I finally made a visit to Granma's Attic & Art Gallery. Everyplace has a story, this place has many - including its name Granma's Attic vs Grandma's Attic.

I learned that it was once a grocery store and the hub of activity on the Central Rim. It also had a run as a book store and a personal residence before its current use. The wooden floor was described as being original and it survived the current owner's children using it for a roller skating surface. The floor had a well defined wear pattern near the corner entrance front door.
The start of a new mural? A well intentioned family member re-painted the building covering a Don Quixote mural, much to the dismay of other family members.
The owner explaining the history of the building and their business.
Door to Dick Lee's studio.
Amongst the usually items you would expect to find at a second hand store, I was surprised to find several works of art in the low 4 figure price range.

These were Dick Lee original works. A longtime Boise commercial and fine artist, his drawings have appeared in National GeographicSports Illustrated, the Washington Post and more. I was informed that prints, while not on display, were available for purchase at a much lower price. Now the "& Art Gallery" sign on the front entrance made sense.

After repairing a youth bike, Rick Lee takes a break near the corner front entry.
A bike trailer is being moved next door to a grass lawn where it will soon under go a thorough washing.
Always enjoyable to learn the backstory of a business and local history.

Streaming for Art in the Surel Mitchell Live-Work-Create District

Jodi Eichelberger with his Stream Coffee and Tea Bike in front of Corridor Paddle Surf Shop during his bike/art tour through the Surel Mitchell Live-Work-Create District in Garden City, Idaho on April 30, 2016.
A Double Thumbs Up event - and you get to ride your bike or if you're lucky, catch a ride in a pedicab!

Tour leader Barton Klinel with passenger Steve Gossett leaves Surel's Place for the next artist studio on Jodi Eichelberger's Stream bike/art tour.
Jodi Eichelber's STRE(A)M Artist Studio/Gallery Bike Tour through the Live-Work-Create District. The April artists and venues on the tour included Surel's Place, Megan Levad, Sara Hill, Will Bennett, Victor Myers and Corridor Surf Shop, Geoffery Krueger, Karen Woods, Gina Phillips, Hindi Morland, Heidi Haislmaier and the new Telaya Winery where Segreto Wood Fired Pizza set up shop for the bike tour group

The April tour was a sellout. Next Tour May 21st. http://artbike.bpt.me

Artist Sara Hill shows the fabric looking texture on one of her paintings done on rice paper. This was the first time she opened her studio to the general public.

Will Bennett's landscaping incorporates marbles for aesthetic purposes and for practical purposes as a weed barrier.
There always seems to be a few "surprises" on each tour and for me, Will Bennett's residence was the place on this tour. From his marble hedging to numerous repurposed products utilized in his landscaping including hen & chicks walkways.

Will Bennett repurposed a metal frame with hen & chicks to use as a walkway at his residence.

This month's bike/art tour started at one of my favorite places: Surel's Place
Poet Megan Levad reads one of her ekphrastic (about a specific piece of art) poems from her book, Why We Live in the Dark Ages. Megan, a former Surel's Place artist-in-residence, also talked about how the artwork throughout the home impacted her during her residency.
Surel's Place honors the legacy of artist Surel Mitchell by offering her home and studio to artists of promise, and of renown, for month-long residencies and professionally supported art events. In this inspiring live/work space artists of all disciplines are given time and freedom to reflect, create, and share their work with the Idaho community.

The Garden City Council officially named her neighborhood after her: The Surel Mitchell Live-Work-Create Art and Spirits District. Her home, now Surel’s Place, is, of course, the district’s anchor.

One of the many tour perks is an Eichelberger prepared complimentary cup of coffee or tea from his ST(r)EAM Coffee & Tea Bike.
The highlight for me was the preview of Karen Woods "The Way to Wilder" series.
Artist Karen Woods talks to Danielle Casazza Hurd. In the background of her studio are paintings in her "The Way to Wilder" series. The series will be on exhibit at the Boise Art Museum May 21 – September 11, 2016.

Artist Karen Woods in her studio with one of the paintings in her "The Way to Wilder" series.
I'm looking forward to this exhibit:

Karen Woods: The Way to Wilder. Boise Art Museum: May 21 – September 11, 2016
Boise based artist Karen Woods presents a new body of work based on a recent journey to Wilder, Idaho. Her large-scale paintings of rain-soaked roads and highways situate the viewer in the front seat of a car, making it possible to experience the beauty and disorientation of traveling through a storm.

Artist Gina Phillips talks to Trish Mizuta about her handmade electric lamps made from eclectic repurposed, recycled, upcycled, reused, reimagined, and salvaged vintage lamps.

Artist Hindi Morland explains her process to participants of the ST(r)EAM Bike/Art tour group.

Victor Myers, owner of Corridor Paddle Surf Shop, explains his process in making custom built paddleboards

Artist Heidi Haislmaier talks to the ST(r)EAM bike/art tour group how she almost exclusively uses a palette-knife resulting in her plein air paintings having an almost impasto appearance due to her heavy coats of layered paint. Haislmaier is the exclusive exhibiting artist at the Telaya Wine Co. Tasting Room & Gallery.

Will Bennett attached  purchased paintings on the outside of his fence so they could be enjoyed by passerby's.

Here's a picture of some of the participant from the second bike/art group. I think the first group was already into the wine tasting next door at Telaya Wine Co.  (L to R: Trish Mizuta, Wytske van Keulen, Oliver Thompson, Barton Klinel, Jodi Eichelberger, Heather Lopez, David Thompson)
